Cancer Data & Statistics

If you are looking for some statistics on the various cancer types, then these are the sites to get the latest figures both in the UK and the US. Clearly, do bear in mind that the values are based on statistics and do not reflect the individual per se. As I often mention to my patients, it is useful to understand numbers (e.g. relative risk vs absolute risk reduction, what is termed ‘normal’, the idea of the normal distribution curve, the normal range, numbers needed to treat, etc.) but essentially it boils down to you as the individual and not the population that actually really matters. For you, it is n = 1. Your circumstance, your situation, in addition to other non-measurable factors all contribute to the final outcome.

Sure, common things being common, knowing the likelihood that for example condition X has a Y percentage of causing Z is really important (based on pooled data). Yet, I would like to think it is also important to remember that you are an individual with your unique set of circumstances where you may not necessarily fit the statistics. Rather than being just a number, it is about you. You may as well be in the mindset of trying to improve the odds by taking the necessary steps to optimise whatever can be optimised rather than to be resigned by the numbers and burying your head in the sand. For a starters, take a look at the various topics covered in Cancer Prevention Research and if you need a bit of help, also the Health & Wellbeing Ideas and The ‘Feeling Good Factor’ section to get you in the right frame of mind.
