Social Prescribing and Other Approaches

What is social prescribing I hear you say? Well, it focuses on the idea of ‘what matters to me’ and takes the holistic approach to people’s health and wellbeing where people with social, emotional or practical needs are empowered to find solutions. People may often be referred to a range of local, non-clinical services; this may include community services that provide e.g. exercise, sports, arts and other social activities. The advantage of course is that medications (in the traditional sense) do not play a part with this form of prescribing and treatment comes from social interactions. After all, they say ‘humans are social beings’ that rely on cooperation to survive and thrive, and naturally seek the companionship of others as part of their well being. That is not to say that medications have to take a back seat. It’s just a different (and likely additional) approach to treating and managing illnesses that may not be purely driven by biological processes that may still be part of your cancer-free journey.

For those looking for a non-psychological and non-drug-based therapy, please see my review on Alpha-Stim (AID), which uses cranial electrotherapy stimulation to manage anxiety, depression and insomnia. This novel therapy is making its way into the NHS (and already used in the private sector) but can be done in the safety and the comfort of your own home.
